The beginning of the year has so many procedures and expectations that need reviewed...and reviewed...and reviewed again...so when all your reviewing pays off it just feels good! Because the Fifth Graders are so responsible this year, we were able to start some really cool things this week!
Two years ago I dipped a toe into flexible seating by adding a couch and standing "Genius Bar." I managed these areas with a daily rotation schedule and it worked really well. Then last year, I decided to go headfirst into flexible seating and purchased yoga balls and made low seating areas and added wiggle seats and another couch...and it was a train wreck. I tried allowing students to choose the best option for themselves, but Fifth Graders consistently made poor choices. I constantly redesigned the seating areas until finally I went back to the rotation schedule I had the year before...and it worked. So this year I started off the year with a rotation schedule and it has been a great success!
Here is an example of the schedule I use:
I move the areas of seating each day, so students always get to try a different area. I added "Yoga Balls" today as well. It has been a great success!
Some Fifth Grade classes also played a collaborative game of "Find Someone Who..." Coordinate Plane style. I found the idea here and loved it! The students were applying their Geometry vocabulary to find someone who had an ordered pair that matched the clue. It was so much fun and the kids did a really great job!
Write something about yourself. No need to be fancy, just an overview.
