This week, my fifth graders started working on adding and subtracting fractions. We pulled out the fraction kits to create "legal trades" (equivalent fractions) to find common denominators. Many students "discovered" that they could use multiples to find common denominators! Goal: Achieved!
Have you used go formative.com? It is a super fun and easy way to quickly assess your students. I like that you can respond to the students right away and fix any misconceptions they might have. Here are some pictures Monday's GoFormative Exit Ticket:
The student names appear above their answer. I deleted them in these pictures for privacy. You can create extended response questions, multiple choice, or provide a whiteboard where students have to draw a model (shown). You can grade their answers or just respond like I did in the second image. As you can see by the answers, some students got it, some need more work. This is a quick and easy way for me to see who needs help.
We have been studying the lasting effects of exploration and colonization. Have you ever considered the lasting effects of the Declaration of Independence? How different would America be if we didn't have this document? The students were assigned a "Breakup Letter." In short, they have to "break up" with something or someone negative-a bad habit, a bully, a mean person, or even a current event-and model their breakup letter off the Declaration of Independence. Here is the document I used to introduce the assignment.
Write something about yourself. No need to be fancy, just an overview.
